Frost Mage PvE: Kalecgos

Kalecgos is the first boss in the Sunwell Plateau raid, as well as an NPC in Magisters’ Terrace. Players have to free him from his enslavement by Kil’jaeden the Deceiver.

It would appear that while residing on the Isle of Quel’Danas, Kalec was possessed by Sathrovarr the Corruptor, a Dreadlord in service to Kil’jaeden.

This boss fight is similar to that of Vaelastrasz in Blackwing Lair, in that a dragon is enslaved by a power greater than himself and must be defeated in order to advance.

Unlike Vaelastrasz, Kalecgos is redeemed when players defeat Sathrovarr from within.” – wowwiki.com

The fight is actually two bosses in one. You must fight the corrupted Kalecgos in dragon form, and Sathrovarr the demon inside of Kalecgos. Each boss will need a tank, and each boss will have different stats and abilities.

Kalecgos Stats:

  • Hit Points – 3,700,000
  • Mana Pool – 1,693,500

Kalecgos Abilities:

  • Arcane Buffet: Inflicts 463 to 537 Arcane damage targets causing a stackable debuff which increases the Arcane damage taken by 500 for 40 seconds. Instant cast. Cast every 8 seconds.
  • Frost Breath: Inflicts Frost damage to targets in a cone in front of Kalecgos, slowing their attack speed by 75% for 12 seconds. 1 second cast. 30 yard range.
  • Wild Magic: Cast upon a player. Grants one of six random buffs or debuffs.
  • Spectral Blast: Cast upon a random player every 20-25 seconds, teleporting that player to Sathrovarr and leaving behind a portal that others can click to join that player. Kalecgos briefly targets the player it is cast on about 2 seconds before the portal spawns. Deals about 5k damage to everyone who is too close to the ported person.
  • Spectral Realm: Debuff placed upon players who enter the Spectral Rift. Lasts 60 seconds, after which the player is ported back to the normal realm.
  • Spectral Exhaustion: Debuff placed upon players who leave the Spectral Realm, preventing them from entering a portal to return to the Spectral Realm. Lasts 60 seconds.
  • Enrage: Increases damage done when either Kalecgos or Sathrovarr hits 10% health.

Sathrovarr Stats:

  • Hit Points – 2,700,000
  • Mana Pool – 1,693,500

Sathrovarr Abilities:

  • Curse of Boundless Agony: Deals shadow damage over time. Damage dealt with each tick doubles every 5 seconds. When the spell is removed, expires, or kills the target, it jumps to a nearby player.
  • Shadow Bolt Volley: Fires shadow bolts at nearby players, dealing 4250 to 5750 shadow damage.
  • Corrupting Strike: A powerful strike that deals 9500 to 10500 shadow damage, stuns the target, and leaves a debuff that deals 1000 shadow damage every second. Lasts 3 seconds.
  • Enrage: Increases damage done when either Kalecgos or Sathrovarr hits 10% health.

Recommended Consumables:

I recommend using a Flask since this is a very difficult fight and you might see a few deaths. You may use Stamina Food over Spell Damage food if your health is too low. Staying alive is more important than DPSing in this fight.

Frost Mage Overview:

  • Pet Friendly: Moderate
  • Cooldowns: Save Ice Block and Cold Snap for emergencies

Your pet will not be taking any damage from any of the bosses during this encounter. However there it is currently bugged that when you have your Water Elemental in the Spectral Realm, it will only cast one Waterbolt and stop attacking. Each Waterbolt must be manually cast by you if you want the pet to keep doing damage, and it is very annoying.

**CHANGED**
Pet will now take damage from the Arcane Buffet on Dragon side now, but will now cast Waterbolt normally on Demon side.

Save your Water Elemental, Trinkets and Icy Veins for when you are in the Spectral Realm and use them on Sathrovarr. Sathrovarr will usually be behind on DPS.

Make sure you know what group you are in, and what group you are responsible for decursing. You will be assigned to a group, and you will follow that group if anyone in the group gets teleported. Everyone should have a macro announcing when they get ported so the rest of the group knows to follow into the portal. You should have one too.

/Raid —- UTADA PORTED!! G4 Go Go Go! —-

To make things easy for raids to announce stuff on vent, you should have a set name for each “side”. Some guilds use “Top Side” for Kalecgos, and “Bottom Side” for Sathrovarr, but that could get confusing. I suggest using “Dragon Side” and “Demon Side”, it is a bit more obvious.

While on Dragon Side, stay with your group, but stay SPREAD out to avoid taking any damage from Spectral Blast. Try to keep Ice Barrier up at all times to decrease the amount of raid damage you will receive. Your healers will thank you for this.

Be aware of the players around you, if they move too close you can tell them that they’re too close, or you can adjust yourself. Also, DO NOT stand right next to the bushes, if you get ported, it will make it super difficult for other players to click on the portal.

Be aware if Kalecgos ever casts Wild Magic on you. It will be one of six random buffs/debuffs: +100% Healing, +100% Cast Time, -50% Physical Hit, +100% Melee / Spell Critical Damage, +100% Threat, or -50% Mana / Rage / Energy Costs. Make sure you don’t pull aggro if you get the Spell Critical Damage buff, you will be critting for about 9k damage.

Portals:

Every 20 – 30 seconds, Kalecgos will cast Spectral Blast on a random raid member, teleporting that player to the Demon Side, and opening a portal where that person was standing. At that time, everyone in that group must click on the portal and follow that person. The portal lasts for 10 seconds. It is important to know that the portal has a 1.5 second cooldown whenever someone clicks and enters the portal. So keep clicking on that portal until you make it inside.

Also a good thing to know, if you happen to be the last group to be portaled in, you will most likely have a lot of stacks of the Arcane Buffet. So if you see that you have over 10 stacks on you, you can use Ice Block to get rid of all the debuffs, and take less damage from the Arcane Buffets until your group gets ported.

While in the Demon Side, make sure you clump up with all the other ranged players. It makes it easier for healers to do group heals. Keep DPSing while keeping Ice Barrier up since he does a Shadow Bolt Volley. Blow all your cooldowns and do as much damage you can on him.

Decursing:

Sathrovarr will randomly cast Curses of Boundless Agony on a random player. DO NOT decurse immediately, it will be a waste of mana and precious DPS time. The curse will bounce to another player once it is decursed. The curse starts off ticking for only 100 damage a second for the first 5 seconds. The next 5 seconds it ticks for 200 damage a tick, and doubles every 5 seconds eventually reaching 3200 damage a tick at +25 seconds. So it is important to decurse ONLY after it has been up for over 10 seconds.

Having the Decursive mod will help greatly since it has a built in curse timer to track how long a curse has been up. As the fight goes on, you will be doing less and less DPSing and more decursing. Staying alive and keeping the raid decursed is more important than DPSing.

Listen on vent for instructions and keep an eye out on the health percentages on each boss. Once one of them hits 10% they both enrage, so it is important that you get both of them down to 11% before taking either of them down to 10%.

Also most guilds like to take down Sathrovarr down first because if you take Kalecgos down first, Kalecgos becomes stunned and no longer portals players to the Spectral Realm, which means no more players to DPS on Sathrovarr.

Stay alive, be aware of your surroundings, take your portals, decurse, DPS, collect loot.

Mage Loots:

Best bracers in the game, grab them whenever you can. Blizz did a better job with the gem sockets this time. I would only go for the pants if absolutely no one else needs them. Don’t bid against healers please. Better pants drop off of Brutallus, the next boss you will face.

    Hi Tuan,

I love what you are doing with the fost mage vs boss posts. Everything a frost mage needs to know and some history for a variety of boss fights in one place is great.

I think its going to be particularly useful for up and coming frost mages who perhaps are just starting on some of these bosses, even if they are just starting Kara, or if they are progressing through end game content.

Keep up the good work, Frost mages around the world salute you!

Thanks! I’m glad you find them helpful. The main reason I put up that Poll was to get a feel of where everyone is at Progression-wise so I could somewhat prioritize which boss guides to do first.

    @ Bobyboucher

Yea it looks like they changed it so that the pet takes damage on arcane explosions now like you said. But the fix to Waterbolt in the demon side is a huge plus. Since it is usually the side that is behind on dps, just save your pet for demon side only now.
