WotLK: Alpha Mage Spells

Last time I went over the new WotLK Alpha Talents for Mages. This time I will go over the new Spells and Old Spells with new ranks and changes. I will also list the level you need to obtain the spell.

Let me remind you again that this is still in the Alpha Test phase, and everything you read now, will most likely be changed many times before it is finalized for actually release. Source where I get my WotLK Alpha Info: http://wotlk.wikidot.com/

Why do I even bother looking ahead at content that won’t affect us until later? Well first of all, it keeps me interested in the game. Looking at the new changes, and new content gets me excited for the new expansion. Also planning ahead of time never hurts. I can plan out what talents I will take while leveling up, what spell rotations have opened up, and so forth.

I am pretty sure that I wasn’t the only person who bought up all the [Void Crystal] for very cheap, and sold all their [Large Prismatic Shard] before the prices when down after Patch 2.4.2, and made a hefty profit.

Only two new Frost Spells, and one of them is talented. There is only one rank for each spell, and both of the spells are seen mainly as PvP spells, and gives even more survivability to the Frost Tree.

Changes:

  • No changes were made to the existing Frost Spells.

Old Spells:

  • Frostbolt (Rank 15): Level 75, 445 mana, 702 to 758 frost damage.
  • Frostbolt (Rank 16): Level 79, 505 mana, 799 to 861 frost damage.
  • Ice Lance (Rank 2): Level 72, 165 mana, 182 to 210 frost damage.
  • Ice Lance (Rank 3): Level 78, 180 mana, 221 to 255 frost damage.
  • Frost Nova (Rank 6): Level 75, 255 mana, 365 to 415 frost damage.
  • Cone of Cold (Rank 7): Level 72, 840 mana, 559 to 611 frost damage.
  • Cone of Cold (Rank 8): Level 79, 1045 mana, 707 to 773 frost damage.
  • Blizzard (Rank 8): Level 74, 2125 mana, 1680 frost damage over 8 sec.
  • Blizzard (Rank 9): Level 80, 2570 mana, 2032 frost damage over 8 sec.
  • Ice Armor (Rank 6): Level 79, 930 mana, increases armor by 930, frost resistance by 40.
  • Frost Ward (Rank 7): Level 79, 520 mana, absorbs 1950 frost damage.
  • Ice Barrier (Rank 7): Level 75, 725 mana, absorbs 2800 damage.
  • Ice Barrier (Rank 8): Level 80, 850 mana, absorbs 3300 damage.

New Spells:

  • Shatter Shield (Rank 1): Level 80, 1200 mana, absorbs 2000 physical damage, all enemies within 10 yards are frozen for 8 seconds when shield is destroyed.
  • Deep Freeze (Rank 1): Talented, 8% base mana, 1.5 second cast, stuns the target for 5 seconds, only usable on frozen targets.

Thoughts:

At first I many possibilities were running through my head for PvPing with Deep Freeze. New Shatter Combos would be Pet Freeze + Frostbolt + Deep Freeze, free Frostbolt while stunned. That was when I thought Deep Freeze was an instant cast.

It now seems that Deep Freeze is a 1.5 second cast. When would be a good use for this now? Most classes would PvP trinket out if they were stunned and frozen at the same time. I can’t seem to think of any good uses for Deep Freeze at the moment. Any suggestions?

Shatter Shield = more Shatters, less dying, ’nuff said.

One of the new Fire Spells is a frost/fire hybrid spell, and the other one is a explosive Area of Effect (AoE) spell. Both of the spells does what the fire tree does best, that is to do damage.

Changes:

  • No changes were made to the existing Fire Spells.

Old Spells:

  • Fireball (Rank 15): Level 74, 575 mana, 783 to 997 fire damage, 100 fire damage over 8 second.
  • Fireball (Rank 16): Level 78, 655 mana, 888 to 1132 fire damage, 116 fire damage over 8 second.
  • Scorch (Rank 10): Level 73, 215 mana, 321 to 379 fire damage.
  • Scorch (Rank 11): Level 78, 250 mana, 376 to 444 fire damage.
  • Fire Blast (Rank 10): Level 74, 575 mana, 760 to 900 fire damage.
  • Fire Blast (Rank 11): Level 80, 695 mana, 925 to 1025 fire damage.
  • Pyroblast (Rank 11): Level 73, 600 mana, 1014 to 1284 fire damage, 384 fire damage over 12 seconds.
  • Pyroblast (Rank 12): Level 77, 700 mana, 1190 to 1510 fire damage, 452 fire damage over 12 seconds.
  • Flamestrike (Rank 8): Level 72, 1565 mana, 688 to 842 fire damage, 620 fire damage over 8 seconds.
  • Flamestrike (Rank 9): Level 79, 1955 mana, 873 to 1067 fire damage, 780 fire damage over 8 seconds.
  • Blast Wave (Rank 8): Level 75, 795 mana, 882 to 1038 fire damage.
  • Blast Wave (Rank 9): Level 80, 930 mana, 1047 to 1233 fire damage.
  • Dragon’s Breath (Rank 5): Level 75, 900 mana, 935 to 1085 fire damage.
  • Dragon’s Breath (Rank 6): Level 80, 1050 mana, 1101 to 1279 fire damage.
  • Fire Ward (Rank 7): Level 78, 520 mana, absorbs 1950 fire damage.
  • Molten Armor (Rank 2): Level 71, 865 mana, causes 130 fire damage when hit.
  • Molten Armor (Rank 3): Level 79, 1125 mana, causes 170 fire damage when hit.

New Spells:

  • Frostfire Bolt (Rank 1): Level 75, 450 mana, 629 to 731 fire damage, 60 fire damage over 9 seconds.
  • Frostfire Bolt (Rank 2): Level 80, 530 mana, 722 to 838 fire damage, 90 fire damage over 9 seconds.
  • Living Bomb (Rank 1): Level 60, 400 mana, 75 fire damage every 2 seconds, 152 additional fire damage after 10 seconds.
  • Living Bomb (Rank 2): Level 70, 765 mana, 98 fire damage every 2 seconds, 392 additional fire damage after 10 seconds.
  • Living Bomb (Rank 3): Level 80, 1010 mana, 130 fire damage every 2 seconds, 520 additional fire damage after 10 seconds.

Thoughts:

A really cool scenario popped into my head while writing up this post for a Fire Mage. Big group of mobs (or players), Molten Armor on, Shatter Shield on, Mana Shield on, Living Bomb on, run into the middle of crowd, they beat on you, taking out your Shields, freezing them in the process, you Ice Block with 8 seconds left on Living Bomb. They take damage still from Living Bomb, and watch as you tick down like a time bomb, and they can’t do nothing but watch (unless they had Mass Dispel).

That plus all the other AoE spells you have in your arsenal means death to all your opponents.

Just like how some of the Arcane talents are being changed, some Arcane Spells are also getting a change. Only one new spell for the Arcane Tree, and it is an instant damage spell. Looks like a new Arcane spell rotation coming up.

Changes:

  • Mage Armor: Now also reduces duration of harmful magic effects on you by 50%.
  • Evocation: Mana restored increased to 75% and duration increased to 10 seconds.
  • Invisibility: Fade out time changed to 3 sec.

Old Spells:

  • Arcane Missiles (Rank 12): Level 75, 1010 mana, 320 arcane damage every 1 sec for 5 sec.
  • Arcane Missiles (Rank 13): Level 79, 1135 mana, 360 arcane damage every 1 sec for 5 sec.
  • Arcane Blast (Rank 2): Level 71, 255 mana, 690 to 800 arcane damage.
  • Arcane Blast (Rank 3): Level 76, 300 mana, 805 to 935 arcane damage.
  • Arcane Blast (Rank 4): Level 80, 335 mana, 912 to 1058 arcane damage.
  • Arcane Explosion (Rank 9): Level 76, 725 mana, 481 to 519 arcane damage.
  • Arcane Explosion (Rank 10): Level 80, 820 mana, 538 to 582 arcane damage.
  • Conjure Food (Rank 9): Level 75, 1100 mana, 10 sweet potato pies.
  • Conjure Food (Rank 10): Level 79, 1245 mana, 8 strudels.
  • Conjure Water (Rank 10): Level 74, 1100 mana, 10 skins of rain water.
  • Conjure Water (Rank 11): Level 78, 1245 mana, 6 skins of crystal spring water.
  • Conjure Mana Gem (Rank 6): Level 77, 2375 mana, Mana Sapphire, restores 3330 to 3500 mana.
  • Conjure Mana Gem (Rank 7): Level 80, 1670 mana, Mana Opal, 2340 to 2460 mana, one charge.
  • Arcane Intellect (Rank 7): Level 80, Increases intellect by 60.
  • Arcane Brilliance (Rank 3): Level 80, Increases intellect by 60.
  • Dampen Magic (Rank 7): Level 76, 810 mana, decreases spell damage taken by 240, healing taken by 480.
  • Amplify Magic (Rank 7): Level 77, 835 mana, increases spell damage taken by 240, healing taken by 480.
  • Mana Shield (Rank 8): Level 73, 190 mana, absorbs 1080 damage.
  • Mana Shield (Rank 9): Level 79, 235 mana, absorbs 1330 damage.
  • Mage Armor (Rank 5): Level 71, 660 mana, increases all resistances by 21, reduces duration of harmful magic effects on you by 50%.
  • Mage Armor (Rank 6): Level 79, 860 mana, increases all resistances by 40, reduces duration of harmful magic effects on you by 50%.

New Spells:

  • Arcane Barrage (Rank 1): Talented, 335 mana, 3 second cooldown. 386 to 470 arcane damage.
  • Arcane Barrage (Rank 2): Level 70, 405 mana, 3 second cooldown, 709 to 865 arcane damage.
  • Arcane Barrage (Rank 3): Level 80, 610 mana, 3 second cooldown, 936 to 1144 arcane damage.

Thoughts:

With the changes to Invisibility and the Arcane talent to reduce the “fade out ” time of Invisibility by 2 seconds makes the spell 10 x more useful. But is it worth putting 17 talent points into the Arcane Tree if you are not Arcane Spec? Hmm…

With Arcane Barrage in the Arcane Mage’s arsenal, a new spell rotation that might work: AB x 3, ABr, AM, repeat. Depending on how much Spell Haste you have, you might be able to throw in another ABr after the AM before repeating.

AB = Arcane Blast, AM = Arcane Missiles, ABr = Arcane Barrage (first abbreviation for the spell!)

New Mage Armor = Half the silence when Counterspelled/Spell Locked/Silenced?

there is talent called winters grasp which counts as frozen for 4 seconds thats when u can use deep freeze on druid and anything else.

My scenario for killing a druid would be :
winters grasp >icy veins > ice lance > deep freeze > shater from elemental > silence >frost bolt > fire blast > go near frost nova ice lance

Yea I have been thinking that too. Now you can Ice Lance until Winter’s Grasp procs. According to WoWHead, Winter’s Grasp lasts 5 seconds now. What I was thinking is when it procs, use Deep Freeze first, then you will have enough time to get off a Shatter Combo while Winter’s Grasp is still up.
