Warcraft Lore: Anveena and Kalecgos

sunwell.jpgWhile looking up boss strategies during the past week, I came across a lot of interesting Lore in the Warcraft world. It makes any encounters you face in the game ten times more rewarding when you witness the event, and actually KNOW what is going on. For me at least, it makes the game worth every penny spent and more.

I am sure there are a lot of you out there who have encountered Magtheridon and have taken him down. But how many of you out there know WHY he is locked up in there? Sure there are some of you who could care less about the lore, and just want to kill him for his 20 Slot Bag. For everyone else who wants to experience more of the Warcraft Universe, should look it up.

Arthas, to some of you is just the next boss to beat in the next expansion for phat loots. To others, he is the Paladin turned Death Knight who defeated Illidan to take the Frozen Throne and became the Lich King. See what I did right thar?

I highly recommend it to everyone who plays the game, to go look up some Warcraft Lore. Go read up on Warcraft 1-3 and The Frozen Throne. Or give the Sunwell Trillogy a read. You don’t know what you are missing. It will make the gaming experience more rewarding to you.

Now I present to you some Sunwell Lore:

anveena.jpgAnveena Teague appears to be a kind and beautiful peasant girl from Tarren Mill. Unbeknownst to anyone, she was in fact not a human at all, but rather the remaining energies of the Sunwell transfigured into the form of a human avatar by the red dragon Korialstrasz. The illusion created by Korialstrasz had Anveena living with a doting mother and father in a small house somewhere near Tarren Mill. Unexpectedly to the red dragon, Anveena began to develop a life of her own with feelings and emotions.

One day she discovered the blue dragon Kalecgos caught up in the net of dragon hunters led by Harkyn Grimstone, and gave him shelter. Forced to flee when the dragon hunters attacked, Anveena and Kalecgos were thrown into a lake by a blast from one of the hunters’ guns, but managed to survive. As they made their way back to her home, they discovered it was on fire.

It was then that they met Dar’Khan Drathir, a high elf who had betrayed his people to the Scourge, and was seeking the power of the Sunwell. Dar’Khan placed an enchanted ring of binding on both her and Kalec’s necks, and demanded to know the location of the Sunwell energies. They were saved by the timely arrival of Kalec’s intended, Tyrygosa, who took them to Tarren Mill.

After confronting Dar’Khan once more in Tarren Mill and being joined by the paladin Jorad Mace, Anveena, Kalec and Tyri made their way towards the Hinterlands, but were brought down in the Alterac Mountains by a frost wyrm. Anveena was found by the tauren Trag Highmountain, who took her to the ruined castle of Baron Valimar Mordis, an undead nobleman who lived in the area.

The Baron sought to use her power to energize the Orb of Ner’zhul he had captured from the ghoul Ichor, and raise an army to combat the Scourge (and the living as well). Binding Anveena to the Orb, the Baron resurrected undead behemoths and frost wyrms to do his bidding, but was stopped when Trag destroyed the orb in the Baron’s hand. Shortly afterwards, Anveena was captured by Dar’Khan, who took her to the place where she was “born”: the ravaged lands of Quel’Thalas.

kalec.jpgKalecgos of the Blue Dragonflight was an investigator sent by Malygos to Quel’Thalas to locate what appeared to be residual energies from the Sunwell, believed to have been destroyed by the Scourge some time before. What he found – after being downed by the dwarven dragon hunter Harkyn Grimstone and his band – was a strange young human named Anveena Teague.

As they evaded Harkyn’s band of hunters as well as the occasional agent of the Scourge, Kalec and Anveena teamed up with Kalec’s intended, Tyrygosa, and the human paladin Jorad Mace. While in Tarren Mill, they were confronted by the Scourge led by the elven traitor Dar’Khan Drathir, who sought the power of the Sunwell for himself.

The four journeyed together for a while, their exploits eventualy leading them to the land of Quel’thalas where after being assaulted by the traitor Dar’Khan Drathir and an enslaved Korialstrasz they discovered Anveena was the new avatar of the Sunwell. With the assistance of Sylvannas Windrunner Dar’khan was defeated and Anveena was left in the care of Lor’themar Theron and Halduron Brightwing. Kalecgos, having sworn to look after her, remained in Quel’thalas as Anveena’s guardian.

With the invasion of the Isle of Quel’Danas by Kael’thas Sunstrider and the Burning Legion, Anveena has been captured and imprisoned in a field of arcane power within the Sunwell Plateau, where her powers are being drained into the Sunwell for the purpose of summoning Kil’jaeden to Azeroth. Meanwhile, Kalec has returned to the Sunwell with Madrigosa, vowing to rescue her.

Kalecgos Quotes

When Kalec spawns in Magisters’ Terrace, this is the dialogue you can have with him:

Who are you?

“I am Kalecgos, of the Blue Dragonflight.
I have watched over the nascent powers of the Sunwell for some time, but now I see that its terrible power could usher in the end of our world!”

What can we do to assist you?

“Defeating Kael’thas is a task worthy of your undivided attention.
Beyond that, if you are capable of organizing an army, there are many wrongs in the Sunwell to be addressed.
Perhaps we shall meet again there.”

What brings you to the Sunwell?

“A friend and I have come to rescue a young human woman from the clutches of the Legionlord, Kil’jaeden and his vile minions.
We’ve discovered that Kael’thas is trying to summon Kil’jaeden from the depths of the Sunwell itself.
For the sake of this world – this cannot come to pass! I am committed to seeing that it does not.”

You’re not alone here?

“Madrigosa accompanied me on this journey, but we have become separated in the Sunwell.
May fate keep her safe.”

What would Kil’jaeden want with a mortal woman?

“Anveena is no mere mortal. Those who recognize her true nature stop at nothing to possess her.
She once rescued me, and now I intend to return the favor.”

Madrigosa Quotes

When you free Kalecgos and find Madrigosa fighting Brutallus in the next area:

Madrigosa: Hold, friends! There is information to be had before this devil meets his fate!
Madrigosa creates a wall of ice, preventing the raid from passing.
Madrigosa: Where is Anveena, demon? What has become of Kalec?
Brutallus: Puny lizard! Death is the only answer you’ll find here!
Madrigosa freezes Brutallus.
Madrigosa: You will tell me where they are!
Brutallus breaks free from the ice.
Brutallus: Grah! Your magic is weak!
Madrigosa traps Brutallus in an arcane barrier.
Madrigosa: Speak, I grow weary of asking!
Brutallus does battle with Madrigosa, eventually killing her.
Madrigosa: Malygos, my lord! I did my best!
Brutallus: That was fun, but I still await a true challenge!
Brutallus: Come, try your luck!
Brutallus roars, shattering the ice wall.

I hope you found this as interesting as I did. It will make your next visit to the Sunwell Plateau a little bit more entertaining. If you have something to add to this, feel free to do so. There are plenty of you out there who know Warcraft Lore a whole lot better than me.

Awesome! Ahahaha! Stop it, you’re killing me! Anyway, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this is great.

At first I thought to myself “Too long, didn’t read” but then I found myself bored out of my mind in class so I started reading.

I found the story very good. I am one of those players you mention who knows very little about the game’s background. I have never played any of the old Warcraft games.

To me Illidan was just a cool looking Night Elf with sweet looking weapons. After I read this, I went ahead and looked up more information on Illidan. You are right, It does give more meaning to these encounters you find in the game.

I had absolutely no clue who that NPC that helped during the fight with Illidan was when we took him down to 30%. Wow she played a HUGE part in this story. I bet half the raid just thought she was “just some NPC” (me included until today).

Maybe you should write up a little thing on Illidan’s lore to educated the masses. *wink* *wink*

Thank you for this write up. You got me more interested in the game’s universe more than ever now.
