Like some of the previous raid dungeons before (AQ, Kara, and Hyjal), gaining reputation with this faction will award you with a ring which you can upgrade as your rep level increases. Here is what you can get as a Mage:

• Friendly – [Ashen Band of Destruction]
• Honored – [Ashen Band of Greater Destruction]
• Revered – [Ashen Band of Unmatched Destruction]
• Exalted – [Ashen Band of Endless Destruction]

Those are some very, very nice rings, and you definitely want to rep up with the Ashen Verdict for it. Join any 10/25 Icecrown Citadel raid you can. If you see players doing ICC rep runs, join them. But what if you aren’t in a raiding guild, and there aren’t any rep runs going on?

Solo Farming ICC Rep

As a Mage, you have a few moves in your arsenal which will allow you to go in and farm some trash by yourself. I wouldn’t recommend you doing this as your only means to getting rep. It is not a very efficient way to get rep.

You can only pull the first two mobs, then you will have to reset the instance and do it again. Remember: You only get 5 resets per hour.

But if you are a few hundred rep away from your next ring upgrade (like I was two days ago), go for it. This method will get you 150 rep per hour (165 if you are human). Not much, but it is better than nothing if you need it.

Step 1: Get into a Raid

You can’t zone into the instance if you aren’t in a raid. If you are in a guild, it’ll be easy to find someone who is just jumping around Ironforge doing absolutely nothing but chatting in gchat. Give them an invite, then convert your group into a raid.

If you don’t want to bother your guildmates by keeping them in your raid, you can do what I do. Ask your guildie to invite one of your alts into a group, and convert it into a raid. Then log onto your main, and have him invite this character into the raid. Then have him pass you the “leader”, then you can boot him from the raid.

Now you will be in a raid with just you, and your “disconnected” alt. Then you can do all the farming you want without bothering anyone.

Step 2: Go Frost

You can do this as any other spec, but this way makes it ten times easier, and ten times safer. Having Squirtle pull at 45 yards is better than you pulling at 36 yards.

Step 3: Find the Right Guards

When you zone in, you will see guards positioned in three areas of the room, with waves of adds running at them every so often. Check which side the guards kill their mob faster.

In my opinion, you want to find the guards with the two Death Knights, usually on the left side of the room if you are looking towards the first boss. They seem to pick up the mobs faster, and hold aggro better. Position yourself with the guards directly between you and the two mobs.

Step 4: The Pull

Wait for when a wave of adds attack, and are killed, then get ready to pull. Stand back, target the mob closest to your side, and send Squirtle to attack.

Your Water Elemental will be pulling while standing right where the guards are. Say goodbye to Squirtle, he won’t survive what is going to happen next.

Step 5: Kill the Adds

Both mobs will aggro, and will run at Squirtle. Sadly, Squirtle will not make it. Once he dies, both mobs will turn and attack one of the guards right where Squirtle died. If not, just simply use Invisibility before they get to you.

Make sure the guard has aggro on BOTH mobs before you start attacking. You don’t want to proc a buff and have the other mob run at you and kill you. Attack and kill the mob that the guard is attacking, then move on to the next one.

On 10 man, the one guard can easily solo the two mobs without needing much help, but on 25 man, he will die and the adds will come after you if you don’t help him kill the adds.

Step 6: ????

Step 7: Profit

Gain reputation with Ashen Verdict, and collect your loot. On 10 man, you will get around 1 gold per pull, on 25 man, you get around 2.5 gold per pull.

Yes, the trash does drop greens and epics! I personally haven’t had any epics drop yet, but had a couple of greens drop for me. Plus the epics are Bind on Equipped!

Remember again, you can only pull the first two mobs, and will have to zone out and reset the instance before doing it again. You can only reset the instance five times an hour, before you are locked out of instances.

Not a fast way to farm rep, but if you are lucky enough to have an epic drop, it will be way worth the troubles. Along with the rings you can get with rep, there is a vendor that sells trade recipes for various professions.

If you were a Sunwell Plateau raider back in the Burning Crusade, you will find this boss encounter very similar to the M’uru fight. Also much like the M’uru fight, this encounter will test your raid’s coordination and teamwork.

You will have to deal with waves and waves of adds while DPSing down Lady Deathwhisper’s Mana Shield. Not only that, you will have to deal with raid damage and crowd control. Sounds fun right?

Boss Stats:

• Hit Points – 3,000,000 (10man), 13,400,000 (25man)
• Mana – 3,300,000 (10man), 14,000,000 (25man)
• 10 Minute Enrage Timer

Phase One Abilities:

• Mana Barrier: Absorbs all damage done to Lady Deathwhisper, draining her mana instead.
• Shadow Bolt: Inflicts 7,438 to 9,562 (9k-11k on 25man) Shadow damage to the current target.
• Death and Decay: Inflicts 4,500 (6k on 25man) Shadow damage every 1 second to enemies within the area of the spell. The entire spell lasts 10 seconds.
• Dominate Mind: Mind Controls 1 player, increasing their damage by 200% and healing by 500%. Lasts 12 seconds. (25man only)
• Dark Empowerment: Empowers a random Adherent or Fanatic, causing them to deal area damage with spells. Also makes the target immune to interrupts.

Phase Two Abilities:

• Frostbolt: Inflicts 40,950 to 43,050 Frost damage to the current target. Can be interrupted.
• Touch of Insignificance: Reduces the target’s threat generation by 20% per application. Stacks up to 5 times.
• Death and Decay: Inflicts 4,500 Shadow damage every 1 second to enemies within the area of the spell. The entire spell lasts 10 seconds.

Recommended Consumables:

• [Flask of the Frost Wyrm]
• Food of your choice or Fish Feast

This is a complex fight with a lot of target switching, interrupting, crowd controlling, and a lot of raid awareness. You would want any consumables which may help your DPS.

Frost Mage Overview:

• Pet Friendly: Friendly
• Cooldowns: You will not have to save your Ice Blocks or Cold Snap for anything, so use it for emergencies.

Your Water Elemental will have a 80% damage reduction to AoE damage so you don’t have to worry about moving him around to avoid Death and Decay. Just keep him on Lady Deathwhisper the entire time to take down the Mana Barrier faster.

Deep Freeze

With all the target switching the entire fight, it’ll be hard to save your Deep Freezes for the boss. It would be a waste to cast it on an add, and it would be a waste of time to switch back to the boss to cast Deep Freeze, then switch back. Unless you use this handy macro I made by modifying a Sheeping macro I’ve been using.

Now whenever Fingers of Frost procs, and Deep Freeze is off cooldown, you can throw a Deep Freeze on Lady Deathwhisper without having to switch your target. You don’t have to be facing her to cast it either, just stand within range of Deep Freeze’s 36yd range.

Just make sure you make Lady Deathwhisper your focus target before the fight.

Phase One

During Phase One, there will be waves of adds that will enter from the sides of the room. In 10man, they will spawn from only one side at a time, alternating. In 25man, they spawn from both sides at the same time. In both version, there is one additional add that spawns from the stairs where you enter the room. This makes 4 adds per wave for 10man, and 7 adds per wave for 25man.

The raid’s priority should be taking down all the adds as soon as possible before switching back onto Lady Deathwhisper. Sometimes a person or two will be dedicated to DPSing Lady Deathwhisper the entire time to bring her into Phase Two faster, but having the entire raid focusing on adds first, is much safer.

Cult Adherents

These adds you should NOT be DPSing. They will be handled by the Physical DPS in your raid for these reasons:

• Shroud of the Occult: Deflects all harmful spells back to their caster. Also prevents cast interrupting. Absorbs 50,000 damage before breaking.
• Adherent’s Determination: Grants the Adherent 99% spell damage reduction. Used when Reanimated.

Cult Fanatics

These are the adds you will be focusing on. Fanatics will be you main priority, with Reanimated Fanatics being your top priority. They will also cast Vampiric Might on themselves- make sure you Spellsteal that buff!

Killing Fanatics take priority over DPSing the boss. The faster they are killed, the more time you can switch back onto the boss and keep DPSing. Have a macro set up for quick switching:

/target Cult Fanatic

Just make sure to give your tank a few seconds to pick up the add before you blow him up. They hit pretty hard, and can kill you in a few hits.

Decursing / Sheeping

During Phase One, the Adherent adds will also cast Curse of Turpor on random raid members. Make sure you decurse them as soon as you can. If it is on you AND another person, make sure you decurse yourself first. If not, that curse will put a 15 second cooldown on your Remove Curse ability.

During 25man, Lady Deathwhisper will randomly mind control a raid member. It will be your job to Polymorph that person as quickly as possible too.

Highly Recommended: Decursive Mod

Phase Two

When her Mana Barrier is depleted, she will move from her spot, and no more adds will spawn. Spread out all around her and DPS. Make you throw out a Counterspell whenever you can while she is casting Frostbolt. They hit very hard.

There will be ghosts which spawn from the corpse of the Adherent and Fanatic adds. If you see a ghost following you, run away. When they explode, it hurts.

Strategy

Keep Ice Barrier up, and don’t stand in the Death and Decay. Make sure all the Cult Fanatics are dead before switching back to the boss.

This fight is all about execution. If the raid does everything correctly, this fight will be very easy. Pay attention to your surroundings, and listen to vent for when your tank calls out for DPS. They will usually call out when there is a Reanimated Adherent or Fanatic, so be sure to listen if caster DPS is called for.

Lots of good loot from this boss. The shoulders I would pass because you would want the Tier 10 shoulders. The Bracers of Dark Blessings I would pass to healers if they wanted it. Everything else I would go for.

Look what I found under my Christmas tree!

Overall, 2009 had been a great year. Going back through all my posts for 2009, there had been a lot of good stuff for the year. Here’s a quick recap of the cool things for me in 2009.

Soloing Onyxia

This was one of the coolest things I’ve done in WoW- and was a lot of fun! After seeing Faxmonkey pull this off, I HAD to give it a try. Although it only took me three attempts to succeed, at any moment, any slip-up could get you killed. I had to stay on my toes at every moment, and keep an eye on my Health/Mana bars while managing my cooldowns efficiently.

One thing I regret was that I was never able to go back and solo her again before Blizzard changed her into a level 80 raid. I wish I had Fraps the fight. Now I’ll never have that chance again…

Mages are Asshats

We can’t help it, it is written in our class DNA. Don’t fight the asshat-ness, just embrace it. I’m usually a nice Mage, hand out free food/water. I’ll portal people when they ask, and never charge. Then there are times where I just see a situation, and I just HAVE to do something.

It’s like when you first saw a group of penguins in Northrend all clumped together. If you didn’t have the urge to dismount and AoE, then you are not embracing your inner-mage. There should be some Mage initiation: AoE or Re-roll!

2009 was a good year for Mages. We got buffs in pretty much every tree, and Blizzard is doing a pretty good job of trying to make all three trees viable for all aspects of the game. Not quite there yet, but a step in the right direction.

For players who have been 80 for awhile now, and are now enjoying the new dungeons and raids, will still have a reason to use the Random Dungeon Finder tool. Once a day, you can get 2 x [Emblem of Frost] from completing a Random Dungeon.

It is also a perfect chance for you to attempt some of those Heroic Dungeon Achievements you haven’t gotten around to getting yet. I know I just got the achievement for piloting the three different drakes in The Oculus. Funny how before this patch was released, I’ve only done that dungeon ONCE!

Ohh… I know why, I hate this place! Even with the recent nerf to this place, I still hate it. To make matters worst, this instance has popped up so many times, that I’ve stopped using the Random Dungeon tool after I’ve gotten my two Frost Emblems. In fact, I think I’m starting to hate The Nexus and The Old Kingdom too!

The increase amount of these instance groups are most likely due to players specifically queuing to get their Red and Green Winter Hats for the Winter Veil achievement. Damn you Winter Veil!!

I know I could just pick the specific Heroics I want to run, but really, I’m only in it for the 20g from doing it the Random way. The two extra emblems are just a little bonus. Plus I was getting my title and pet pug. He’s pretty damn cute!

So anyways, I was playing Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne recently. Playing a few one on one ladder matches, or doing a few 2v2s with my cousin when I realized that Blizzard should implement this random map selection system, to the random dungeon system too.

In WCIII, you are given 5 “thumbs down” you can use on some maps you don’t like. So out of around twenty maps, you pick 5 that you don’t like, your opponent selects 5 that he/she doesn’t like, and the system selects a mutual map for you to play on.

For the Random Dungeon Finder, Blizzard should give us maybe 2 “thumbs down” we can use (heck I’ll even take just 1) to pick dungeons that we do not want to run. Yes, I know this is “Random Dungeon” Finder, and not “Dungeons I Only Like” Finder, but it is only to eliminate one or two that I just dread going to.

For too many times already, I’ve been queued into The Oculus, ported in, only to find that the Tank, Healer, and a DPS has left the group. I then get auto queue for the instance again, and 3 new players pop in, only to also leave the group. Then I wait for the same thing to happen again and again.

Then it is just me and one other guy. That guy be queued in here to get the stupid hat, and I’m refusing to leave because I don’t want to have to wait 15 minutes before being able to queue again.

Don’t lie, you guys have had similar situations. This was just a random solution that popped in my head while playing WCIII, but I hope Blizzard does add something like this. Maybe set it up so that if so many players have left your group, you are given the option to opt out of the instance without suffering the 15 minute penalty. I don’t know… I’m just ranting.

Blah, I hate Oculus!

“Lord Marrogar is a unique creature created of skeletons. He is the first boss in the Icecrown Citadel.”

He has one of the coolest boss character models- he is a 4-headed winged skeleton torso, with a big ice ax! As the first boss of Icecrown Citadel, he’ll serve as a gear check for Guilds to see if they are “ready” to tackle this raid instance.

Boss Stats:

• Hit Points – 5,200,000 (10man), 23,740,000 (25man)
• No Enrage Timer

Abilities:

• Saber Lash: Inflicts 200% weapon damage split evenly between the target and its 2 nearest allies.
• Bone Spike Graveyard: Hurls a spike at a random player, impaling all players between the boss and the target on Bone Spikes, inflicting 9,000 direct Physical damage, and additional 10% health as damage every 1 second until the spike is destroyed.
• Coldflame: Inflicts 6,000 (9k on 25man) Frost damage every 1 second for 3 seconds to anyone caught by the moving line of frost.
• Bone Storm: Inflicts 6,000 (12k on 25man) Physical damage every 2 seconds to players caught in the storm.

Recommended Consumables:

• [Flask of the Frost Wyrm]
• Spell Damage food of your choice or Feast

This is a simple fight with a bit of target switching, and a lot of raid awareness. You would want any consumables which may help your DPS.

Frost Mage Overview:

• Pet Friendly: Friendly
• Cooldowns: You may want to save your Ice Blocks, and Cold Snap for when you get trapped in a Bone Storm.

Your Water Elemental won’t be targeted by Bone Spike and is immune to the Coldflame- but he can be damaged by the Bone Storm. You pet will have a 80% damage reduction to AoE damage so you don’t have to worry about moving him around. Just have him keep on attacking.

Coldflame

During the fight Lord Marrowgar will spawn blue flames on the ground that will move out towards the raid in a linear path. There will be 4 flames, and they shoot out in an “X” pattern. Pretty simple, don’t stand in the blue flames. They do Frost damage, so have Frost Ward up!

The flame doesn’t follow anyone, it shoots out in a straight line. If you see one going towards you, simply side-step and continue on DPSing. Easy enough, no reason why you should take damage from this.

Bone Spikes

Every so often, he will do the Bone Spike Graveyard, which will target a random person in the raid. That person AND every person between him and the boss will be impaled by a Bone Spike. This means: Spread out, and don’t have anyone standing in front of you, between you and the boss.

Bone Spikes take priority over DPSing the boss. If someone is impaled, free him/her as soon as possible. Faster they are freed, the less damage they take, and the faster that person can go back to DPS/healing. Have a macro set up for quick switching:

/target Bone Spike

If you get impaled, you CANNOT Ice Block out of it. Just hope your raid buddies will free you before you die.

Bone Storm

At some points during the fight, he will begin to spin his ax around in circles, and start whirlwinding randomly around the room. At this point, try to spread out, but stay close enough to one of your healers to stay alive. Run away from Lord Marrowgar if you see him headed your direction. You can DPS if you want, but staying alive is more important.

During the Bone Storm phase, he will also spawn the Coldflames too. So keep a look out for the flames spreading on the floor. If you happen to get trapped by a wall with Marrowgar going all Tasmanian Devil on you, feel free to Ice Block and keep yourself alive.

When he stops his Bone Storm, ALL AGGRO RESETS, so let the main tank pick him back up before you start DPSing again. So pay attention and stop DPS when you see that he is about to stop spinning.

Strategy

DPS boss, kill Bone Spikes as soon as they appear, then hop back onto the boss. This isn’t a DPS race, it is a “pay attention and survive” fight. Dodge flames, run when he whirlwinds, and repeat. Keep Ice Barrier up!

Use Blink to get in range to help kill Bone Spikes, or use it to avoid flames, or to get away from the spinning Marrowgar himself. Keep Frost Ward up during the whirlwind phase just in case you have to run through some flames.

A lot of good drop for Mages from the first boss of the instance. The only item that is iffy, is the Frigid Eye because of the mp5 on it. I personally think that ring is better than the Loop of the Endless Labyrinth if you are Hit Capped, but I don’t think I would roll against any healers that want it.

Whenever I had a good amount of gold, I would blow it all on non-combat pets, or 22 Slot Bags. I don’t have any alts really, and I don’t have a gathering profession. My only income really was just from raiding, heroics, and transmuting epic gems everyday. This was enough to get me by, but not enough to let me start buying mounts yet.

Now thanks to the new Dungeon Finder system, Gold- as well as enchanting mats, and emblems, were rolling in at a steady pace. I now had extra money to spend!

Halaa mounts- check! Netherwing mounts- check! Faction ground mounts- check! Old flying mounts- check! Skyguard mounts- check! So pretty much all the 10g – 200g mounts that I can purchase, I got. Now to start saving up for the more higher cost mounts.

Bought my ticket, got on the train, found a seat, got comfortable, then started listening the the latest episode. Another great show!

The guest for the episode was Kim from World of Warcraft Wanderings. Her main is a Paladin, but she has a Frost Mage alt, so she is forgiven.

“Apparently there are no Mages in the Chatroom”

Although it was a great episode, there was a point where the topic of Mages came up, and Fimlys was trying to find out the buff which gives Mages an instant Pyroblast”.

“Hot Streak! It’s Hot Streak!!!!”, I was thinking to myself. “No not PoM Pyro!!! Arghh!”. Good thing I didn’t yell this out loud… I think that would of freaked out a lot of people on the train.

Now I have to make sure I make it to the next live recording to answer any Mage questions from the chatroom.

“Gnomer + Google Voice = Hilarious!”

Just when I thought the show was over, Fim plays a voicemail from everyone’s favorite Gnome. Apparently he didn’t have enough of the Twisted Nether from the episode before, and had to make an appearance again this episode. And again, he reminds me again why I shouldn’t taking anymore breaks. Thanks again Gnomer! I am now out of the woodwork.

Then Fim reads the translation which Google Voice came up with, and I just started busting out laughing. I’m pretty sure I got a lot of strange stares from the other passengers on the train, but it really was hilarious.

The Quieter the Group, the Better

Group forms, players zone in, table is dropped, buffs are given out, first groups of mobs are pulled- and no one has said a single word yet. This is a sign of a quick and painless run. No need to ask for buffs, no need to ask for marks, no need to explain the boss fight- everyone knows what they’re doing.

If the group forms, and players are having to ask for buffs, or needs the MT tank mark what they want killed first- you are in for a long run. There will be deaths, be prepared to use Invisibility.

How to Greed for Disenchant

If there is an Enchanter in the group, you will have the option to “Greed for Disenchant” any Greens, Blues, or Epic BoP items that may drop. Half the time, there are players who still don’t know how to.

It is the new icon to the right of the “Greed” button. If there is an Enchanter, you will be able to used that button. If there isn’t an Enchanter, that option will be grayed out.

“R” Means Ready

Maybe this is just different on some servers, but I’ve noticed a lot of players doing this. Before a big pull, sometimes I see the MT would type “r”, and won’t pull until everyone in the group types “r”.

Still a little weird to me, but whatever, I’ll go along with it. But seriously, why not do a ready check?

Where is the Entrance to the New Dungeons?

Yes, using the new Dungeon Finder tool will teleport the player directly inside each dungeon, but if there is a wipe, you still have to ghost run back. For players who are new to the new Patch 3.3 Dungeons, you will sometimes have to wait for players to find their way to the entrance.

This is for Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron, and Halls of Reflection. I had to stay out a couple of times already to help players find their way back to the instance. There is always one or two person a day who still don’t know their way in yet.

Instant Queues with a Tank or Healer

If you are partied up with a Tank or Healer before queuing for a Random dungeon, it’ll take less than 5 seconds. If you are a DPS by yourself, or with another DPS, queues can take up to around 15 minutes.

If you don’t like waiting, find yourself a Healer or Tank friend, then queue away!

Smack Talking in Guild Chat

Be prepared for GChat to be filled by players who will post Damage Meters from their latest Random Dungeon runs, or links of bad gear with wrong Enchants and/or Gems. Sure, sometimes it is fun to talk about how bad some player’s gear, or spec is- but you have to remember, not everyone who plays is as informed or plays as much as you are.

Instead of taking your time to make fun of someone’s choice of stats or talents in GChat, you could maybe help that player out, and offer some advice on spec or gem choices. Is your DPS twice as much as the other Mage you’re grouped up with? Offer some spell rotation advice.

Helping a player now, can prevent many failed groups in the future.

Overall I’ve had a great experience using the Dungeon Finder tool. Playing with new players can be fun sometimes, and the extra Gold and Emblems from the Random tool is always a plus.Related Posts:

Frost Glyphs

Minor Glyphs:

• Glyph of Fire Ward
• Glyph of Frost Ward
• Glyph of Slow Fall

There is pretty much only three “useful” Minor Glyphs for a PvE Frost Mage. This would free up an inventory slot so you won’t have to hold any [Light Feather] for Slow Fall, and have a 5% chance to reflect any Frost or Fire damage with your Wards.

Yep… that is pretty much it for Minor Glyphs.

Major Glyphs:

• Glyph of Eternal Water
• Glyph of Frostbolt
• Glyph of Molten Armor

Glyph of the Eternal Water is a new Glyph that was released with this patch, and the [Technique: Glyph of Eternal Water] can be bought at the Inscription Vendor in Dalaran. If you are an Inscriptionist, you will need to camp this NPC for a few times, because the Technique is sold in limited quantities.

This Glyph will make your Water Elemental a permanent pet. Just like before, your Water Elemental will be a good portion of your DPS, and having it out indefinitely will be a big boost in your DPS. Just make sure to keep your pet alive! The pet will lose the ability to cast Freeze, but you won’t need that for PvE.

Glyph of Frostbolt will lose the slow effect associated with the spell, but increase the damage it does by 5%. The slow effect won’t affect any of the bosses in dungeons and raids anyway, so it doesn’t matter. You can still proc Frostbite with this glyph on.

Glyph of Molten Armor will make your Molten Armor buff give you 55% of your Spirit as Critical Strike Rating. In your Arcane talent tree, you will have Student of the Mind, which will make this glyph even better!
