Now that you have and understanding of some of the basics of Frost Mage PvP, and know what stats to aim for, you need to gear yourself for PvP. But where to start?

In Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard has given players many ways to obtain PvP gear. The obvious way is to PvP. Participate in Battlegrounds, Wintergrasp, or Arena. You can also get them with badges obtain from dailies!

This is written during Arena Season 8: April 22, 2010.

Honor Points

The basic currency for PvP is Honor Points. You receive them by killing a player of the opposing faction. The best way to get honor is by going into Battlegrounds: Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, Eye of the Storm, and Alterac Valley.

Queue into any of these Battlegrounds from your Character’s Honor tab (press H), and start farming those Honor Points. Make sure you win at least one Random Battleground a day for that extra bonus honor! Not only do you get extra Honor Points, you get Arena Points as well!

You can also get Honor Points by completing the Weekly Wintergrasp Quests that are available in this PvP zone. So make sure you do them every week also!

Remember: The max honor your character can hold is 75,000 Honor Points. If you are getting close to the cap, make sure you spend some of it before continuing to PvP so more.

Battlemaster’s Vivacity – 34,100 Honor

The Personal Rating is the rating you have in your 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 teams. This is different than your Team Rating, especially if you have many different players in your Arena Teams.

Wintergrasp Mark of Honor

These mark of honor you get from… GASP- Wintergrasp! You receive 3 Marks for winning a WG battle, 1 for losing. You have to actually reach at least Rank 2 during the battle to receive full credit for winning the match however. If you don’t, you may only receive 2 or even 1 for a winning match.

Wintergrasp isn’t a Battleground that you can queue from your Honor Tab. You have to queue directly from a Battlemaster at any of your capitals, or actually fly into the zone in Northrend.

Also, there is a 2hr 30min timer in which the faction which wins the match, will have control over the zone. At then end of that timer, the battle will begin again. So there may be a chance that your faction won’t have control of Wintergrasp for many many hours.

Stone Keeper’s Shard

These shards you can obtain by killing any bosses in any Northrend Heroics Dungeons while your faction has control over Wintergrasp. You can also obtain them by completing the Weekly quests that are available in Wintergrasp.

Chances are you have a ton of these shards just sitting on your character begging to be used. Now that you are PvPing, you will have many uses for them now!

Relentless Tuna!

Emblem of Triumph

An optional way to purchase Furious Gladiator gear is by doing Heroic Dungeons. So yes, you can PvE to get PvP gear this way! You have to start somewhere right? If you mainly PvE and want a way to start getting PvP gear, this is the way to go.

This way is much better than jumping straight into Battlegrounds with just whatever gear you happen to have.

Emblem of Frost

Just like the Emblem of Truimph, the Emblem of Frost can also be used to purchase PvP gear. The PvP gear that is available with this emblem is also a step up in tier as well. You will be able to purchase Relentless Gladiator Gear!

Arena Points

Arena Points are… well points you get from participating in Arena Matches. You can get 25 Arena Points by winning a Random Battleground, but you only get in once per day. So that’s more reason for you to win at least once a day.

The points you get is determined by your Arena Rating for your Arena Teams. If you are part of multiple teams, the points you receive will be based off the team rating which will give you more points. You only receive Arena Points for being on a team at the beginning of the WoW week (after server resets), based on how well you did the week before.

“1337″ Ratings!

You can calculate how much Arena Points you will get based on your Team Ratings on WoW’s armory page HERE.

If RATING = 1500 -> POINTS = [.22 x RATING + 14]
If RATING > 1500 -> POINTS = [ 1511.26 / ( 1 + 1639.28 x 2.71828 ^ -0.00412 x RATING ) ]

Penalties:
2v2 teams earn 76% of the points of a 5v5 team with the same rating.
3v3 teams earn 88% of the points of a 5v5 team with the same rating.

If your team rating is under 1500, you will receive at minimum, the amount of points you would if you were 1500 Rating. So the best practices to farm Arena Points is to be in a 5v5 team, and play at least the minimum required.

All the big boy PvP gear are purchased with Arena Points, and almost all of them will require a Personal Rating of some sort in order to purchase them. The Personal Rating required will vary between each item.

Remember: You are only eligible to receive Arena Points for a team if you participated in at LEAST 10 matches AND 30% of the total team’s matches for the week.

We’ve already cover some of the basics in Frost Mage PvP: 101, now let us get into more details about what else we need to know.

The stats you need for PvP is a little bit different from PvE. Of course you will still need Spell Power, Crit, Haste, and Hit; but now you will also need two other stats: Resilience and Spell Penetration.

Spell Power: Self explanatory. The more you have, the more damage you do. Get a lot of it.

Critical Strike Rating: An important stat for doing spike damage, but as a Frost Mage, you don’t NEED it. You will rely on your many talents for your critical strike rates.

Haste: Much more important than Critical Strike Rating for a Frost Mage. The more Haste you have, the faster you cast. The faster you cast, the more damage you do.

Hit Rating: In PvP, you won’t need as much as you did for PvE since you will be fighting opponents at your own level. For PvP purposes, you will only need 4% Hit Rating total. 105 Hit Rating without talents.

Spell Penetration: Is (for the most part) a PvP only stat which will negate your opponent’s Spell Resists. Each point of Spell Penetration will negate a point of Spell Resist.

There isn’t much gear with this stat, so most of your Spell Penetration will come from your enchants and gems.

The hardest part about Spell Penetration is figuring how you need, and against some opponents, Spell Penetration is not needed, and is a wasted stat. It is still a good idea to have some Spell Penetration just in case.

For occasional PvP, having around 75 Spell Penetration is a good start. For Arena, you will want around 150 Spell Penetration.

You want to have enough Spell Penetration to effectively take your opponent’s Spell Resistance down to zero. Let’s take a look at who has Spell Resistance, and how much.

Druids: Can give themselves and their teammates Spell Resistance with a buff.

Mark of the Wild = 54 Spell Resistance

Improved Mark of the Wild = 75 Spell Resistance

Paladins: Can give themselves and their teammates Frost Resistance with an aura.

Frost Resistance Aura = 130 Frost Resistance

Aura Mastery = 260 Frost Resistance Resistance (for 6 seconds)

Shamans: Can give themselves and their teammates Frost Resistance with a totem.

Frost Resistance Totem = 130 Frost Resistance

Death Knights: Can proc a buff on themselves and their teammates.

Acclimation = 50 Frost Resistance (stacks 3 times)

Mages: Has self-buffs and talents which will increase their Spell Resistances.

Magic Absorption = 80 Spell Resistance

Mage Armor = 40 Spell Resistance

Arcane Shielding = 60 Spell Resistance (for Mage Armor)

Remember, group/raid buffs won’t stack with each other. However, self-buffs will stack with group/raid buffs.

At most, you will need 270 Spell Penetration, and that is only against Arcane Mages partnered up with a Paladin. The minimum you will need is 54 Spell Penetration, which is against anyone with a regular Mark of the Wild.

Again, shoot for around 75 Spell Penetration for occasional PvP, and around 150 Spell Penetration for Arenas.

Resilience: A PvP only stat which will increase your survivability significantly. The more you have, the less damage you take, the longer you live.

I am just going to copy and paste what I wrote earlier about Resilience. Resilience is and even more important PvP stat than before.

Patch 3.2 gave us a new change to how Resilience works, and an addition hotfix gave us more damage reduction from Resilience, making this stat even more essential to PvP. You won’t see players with a lot of PvE gear in Arenas as much anymore.

Reduces Chance to be Critically Hit

At level 80, every 94.27 Resilience rating will net you a 1% chance reduction. For example, I have 1125 Resilience, so that will give me a 11.933% chance reduction of being critically hit.

Total Resilience / 94.27 = % Critical Hit Chance Reduction

There is currently no cap to reducing your chances of getting critically hit- so essentially you can be “uncritable” if you stack enough Resilience.

Mana Drains and Critical Strike Damage Reduction

Not only does Resilience reduces the chance of you getting hit by a critical strike, if you do get it, it will reduce the damage of the critical strike! Mana drain reduction too! Resilience is a nice stat.

[Total Resilience / 94.27] x 2.2 = % Critical Strike Damage Reduction

So I take the 11.933% Critical Hit Chance Reduction I have from my 1125 Resilience, and multiply it by 2.2 to get the % of Mana Drains and Critical Strike Damage Reduction I will have: 26.246%.

Additional Damage Reduction From All Damage Sources

On top of all that, Resilience now gives you a straight up damage reduction- and by double the amount of your % Critical Hit Chance Reduction too!

[Total Resilience / 94.27] x 2.0 = % Damage Reduction

So again I take the 11.933% Critical Hit Chance Reduction I have, then multiply it by 2.0 to get how much Damage Reduction I will have: 23.867%.

Next, I think I will get into gear, and how/where to obtain them.

Welcome to introductory class to Frost Mage PvP! This will cover the very basics of what you need to know about PvPing as a Frost Mage. I will making additional posts to cover the different aspects of PvP. You can’t learn it all in one post!

I’ve gotten a few emails about PvPing, so this is my way of answering a few of those questions at the same time. Feel free to ask more questions, or if you want to add to anything I have, please feel free to do so.

Your Role as a Mage

As a Frost Mage, you have a lot of utility, and can do things many classes can’t do, or won’t do well. Playing a Mage isn’t just about doing damage, although damage is one of our main roles. And we can also do more than just provide food and water!

Crowd Control: Also known as “CC”, Mages have the ability to render an opponent useless for a short durations. It can be to make the opponent lose control of their character, keep an opponent from moving, or even preventing an opponent from using their abilities. And we have many ways to do it too!

Polymorph

Frost Nova

Shattered Barrier

Frostbite

Deep Freeze

Counterspell

Cone of Cold

Improved Blizzard

Buffer: We also bring buffs which will help make ourselves and our teammates stronger. We help our teammates crit more often, take less magic damage, take more healing, or just have more mana.

Arcane Intellect

Focus Magic

Amplify Magic

Debuffer: We can also debuff our enemies to make them weaker. We can make the move and attack slower; take more critical strikes; or even receive less healing.

Ice Armor

Winter’s Chill

Permafrost

Tank: Yes, sometimes in PvP we are called on to just stay alive and keep the opponents occupied. When there are many players beating on you, you have many options to use to escape, and stay alive longer.

Ice Block

Mana Shield

Frost Mage PvP Spec

You will need to know how to spec your talent trees. 20/0/51 is usually how most Frost Mages are spec’d, but “how” they spec each tree can be a little different.

“Cookie Cutter Spec”

Tuna’s More Offensive Reeeeeeeeeeeemix!!11one! Spec

“Battleground AoE Goodness”

The Arcane Tree is pretty much straight forward. I’ve seen some players who opted to sacrifice Mana efficiency from Arcane Concentration for more defense from Arcane Fortitude. It will depend on your play style, gear, and team composition. Every other talent is pretty much a “must get”.

The Frost Tree gets a bit more complicated since there are many good talents to get, and not enough talent points. I’ve seen many Mages with different little variations in their Frost Tree. Again it is mostly preference and situational depending on your team composition.

Improved Blizzard: Mainly used for Battlegrounds, Improved Blizzard can be the nastiest movement debuff a Mage can do to a target. With all the right talents, your Blizzard can slow your target(s) to a crawling 30% movement speed, with each tick of Blizzard having a 15% chance to freeze too!

Frost Warding: A nice defensive talent with the utility of also returning you Mana too. It makes your Ice Armor stronger, and gives your Frost and Fire Wards a 30% chance to negate damage, turning that damage into Mana.

Cold as Ice: Some players have 1, 2, or no points at all invested into this talent. If you are used to long drawn out battles, you will probably be taking this talent. If you are used to matches being decided within the first 5 minutes, you might not bother with this talent.

Shattered Barrier: This is a nice talent which gives you addition protection by freezing anything around you whenever your Ice Barrier gets eaten through. The problem is, it shares the same Diminishing Return as Frostbite.

Arctic Winds: Another talent where some players will put some, none, or all points into the talent. It gives you an offensive and defensive boost at the same time. Some players don’t think it is worth all 5 points however.

Enduring Winter: The “general consensus” is that one point into this talent is enough, and I agree with that.

Chilled to the Bone: Some players won’t have all five points invested into this talent, and will use those extra points to put them into Shattered Barrier or Cold as Ice.

Major and Minor Glyphs

You can think of Glyphs like they are enchants, but for your spells! At level 80, you can have up to three Major Glyphs, and three Minor Glyphs.

Minor Glyphs:

Frost Ward

Fire Ward

Slow Fall

Out of all the minor glyphs available, these three are the only ones with a useful use for them. The two wards will have a small chance to reflect back spells, and you can use Slow Fall for buff protection without wasting reagents.

Major Glyphs:

Evocation

Ice Barrier

These two glyphs you must have. The last glyph is open depending on your own preference. Here are some I’ve seen used:

Blink

Deep Freeze

Frost Nova

Ice Armor

Ice Block

Icy Veins

Mana Gem

Mirror Image

Polymorph

Remove Curse

Water Elemental

This was just a quick basic overview of Frost Mage PvP. If you have any questions or like to add something, fee free to do so. For the next section, I will be talking about Resilience and Spell Penetration.

This Gunship Event is fun battle, and a very nice break from the “Tank and Spank” boss system. This fight also serves as a “Raid Coordination” check, and can be a roadblock for some raids. Is refered to as the “Lootship Battle” by some guilds.

Frost Mage Overview:

Pet Friendly: Friendly

Cooldowns: No need to save your Ice Blocks or Cold Snap for anything, so use them for any emergencies such as pulling aggro.

Your Water Elemental won’t be targeted by any mobs, but will be taking some raid damage. Since your pet will have a 80% AoE damage reduction so it won’t get killed easily. Put him on aggressive and let him go nuts.

Gunship Cannon

If you are assigned to be one of the Cannon Gunners, you will get to be doing direct damage to the enemy Gunship. You simply mount one of the Gunship Cannons and you will be given a new vehicle spellbar.

You will only have two options:

Cannon Blast: Inflicts 1,000 Siege damage and generates 6-10 Heat.

Incinerating Blast: Inflicts 1,000 Fire damage and additional Fire damage per point of Heat. Consumes all of the cannon’s heat.

You have to keep an eye on your Cannon’s Heat meter. Make sure it never goes to 100% or else your Cannon will Overheat and will be unable to fire for 3 seconds.

What I do is spam Cannon Blast (1 on your spellbar) until it reaches around 95% heat, then use Incinerating Blast (2 on your spellbar). It makes your Incinerating Blast do more damage, and also purges all the heat from the Cannon so it won’t overheat.

At some points during the fight, the opposing ship will summon a Mage out which will freeze your Cannon’s until they are killed. You will be ejected from the Cannon, and at this point you should help the Defending team kill any adds that are aboard your ship.

*Important* You probably won’t want to be on Cannon duty since it will render your Water Elemental useless every time you mount and dismount from the cannons. You will be forced to resummon your Water Elemental to fix the Pet action bars.

Defending the Gunship

If you are on defense or part of the “Home Team”, your job is to kill any enemies which boards your ship. There will be a portal in the middle of your ship, and mobs will spawn from it. The longer they stay alive, the more damage they do. So after your tank picks them up, kill them as soon as possible.

Since you are also a Ranged DPS, you can also attack the enemy Axe Throwers or Riflemen that are on the enemy ship. Be on the look out for Rocket Artillery. There will be a target circle on the ground where the rocket will land, so don’t stand near it.

Boarding Party

If you are selected to be the boarding party of the “Away Team”, you will get to have the joy of using your [Goblin Rocket Pack] to board the opposing Gunship. Just remember to equip the Rocket Pack to your shirt slot, and add it to your action bars for easy use.

When the opposing Gunship calls out for the Mage to freeze your Cannons, that is the queue for the “Away Team” to hop on over and kill that Mage. Make sure your tank jumps over first so that he can keep you safe from Saurfang or Bronzebeard.

After the Mage is dead, it is recommended that the “Away Team” return back to the ship before Saurfang or Bronzebeard builds up too many stacks of Battle Fury, which will pretty much allow them to kill your tank very easily. Make sure you return to your ship BEFORE your tank does. If he leaves before you, that will leave Saurfang or Bronzebeard to kill any stragglers.

While you are on your ship waiting for the enemy Mage to appear, you will be helping with any adds on your ship.

Strategy

Cannon Gunners attack enemy ship, “Away Team” kills Mages, “Home Team” kill adds. Rinse and repeat. Take down the enemy ship’s HP before they take down your ship. Collect your loot.

Mage Loots:

[Midnight Sun] (10N)

[Muradin's Spyglass] (10N)

[Ring of Rapid Ascent] (25N)

[Amulet of the Silent Eulogy] (25N)

[Gunship Captain's Mittens] (25N)

[Corp'rethar Ceremonial Crown] (25N)

[Midnight Sun] Heroic (10H)

[Muradin's Spyglass] Heroic (10H)

[Ring of Rapid Ascent] Heroic (25H)

[Amulet of the Silent Eulogy] Heroic (25H)

[Gunship Captain's Mittens] Heroic (25H)

[Corp'rethar Ceremonial Crown] Heroic (25H)

A lot of good drop for Mages from the “Lootship Battle”. The only item that is iffy, is the Midnight because of the mp5 on it. I personally have been passing them to any healers that needed them. If no healers needed it, only then I would grab it. There are plenty of weapon alternatives out there.

With the latest raid released with Patch 3.3, players will finally get to confront Arthas in the Icecrown Citadel. In the new 10 and 25 man raid, players can earn reputation with the Ashen Verdict faction while killing trash and bosses in the dungeon.

Like some of the previous raid dungeons before (AQ, Kara, and Hyjal), gaining reputation with this faction will award you with a ring which you can upgrade as your rep level increases. Here is what you can get as a Mage:

Friendly – [Ashen Band of Destruction]

Honored – [Ashen Band of Greater Destruction]

Revered – [Ashen Band of Unmatched Destruction]

Exalted – [Ashen Band of Endless Destruction]

Those are some very, very nice rings, and you definitely want to rep up with the Ashen Verdict for it. Join any 10/25 Icecrown Citadel raid you can. If you see players doing ICC rep runs, join them. But what if you aren’t in a raiding guild, and there aren’t any rep runs going on?

Solo Farming ICC Rep

As a Mage, you have a few moves in your arsenal which will allow you to go in and farm some trash by yourself. I wouldn’t recommend you doing this as your only means to getting rep. It is not a very efficient way to get rep.

You can only pull the first two mobs, then you will have to reset the instance and do it again. Remember: You only get 5 resets per hour.

But if you are a few hundred rep away from your next ring upgrade (like I was two days ago), go for it. This method will get you 150 rep per hour (165 if you are human). Not much, but it is better than nothing if you need it.

Step 1: Get into a Raid

You can’t zone into the instance if you aren’t in a raid. If you are in a guild, it’ll be easy to find someone who is just jumping around Ironforge doing absolutely nothing but chatting in gchat. Give them an invite, then convert your group into a raid.

If you don’t want to bother your guildmates by keeping them in your raid, you can do what I do. Ask your guildie to invite one of your alts into a group, and convert it into a raid. Then log onto your main, and have him invite this character into the raid. Then have him pass you the “leader”, then you can boot him from the raid.

Now you will be in a raid with just you, and your “disconnected” alt. Then you can do all the farming you want without bothering anyone.

Step 2: Go Frost

You can do this as any other spec, but this way makes it ten times easier, and ten times safer. Having Squirtle pull at 45 yards is better than you pulling at 36 yards.

Step 3: Find the Right Guards

When you zone in, you will see guards positioned in three areas of the room, with waves of adds running at them every so often. Check which side the guards kill their mob faster.

In my opinion, you want to find the guards with the two Death Knights, usually on the left side of the room if you are looking towards the first boss. They seem to pick up the mobs faster, and hold aggro better. Position yourself with the guards directly between you and the two mobs.

Step 4: The Pull

Wait for when a wave of adds attack, and are killed, then get ready to pull. Stand back, target the mob closest to your side, and send Squirtle to attack.

Your Water Elemental will be pulling while standing right where the guards are. Say goodbye to Squirtle, he won’t survive what is going to happen next.

Step 5: Kill the Adds

Both mobs will aggro, and will run at Squirtle. Sadly, Squirtle will not make it. Once he dies, both mobs will turn and attack one of the guards right where Squirtle died. If not, just simply use Invisibility before they get to you.

Make sure the guard has aggro on BOTH mobs before you start attacking. You don’t want to proc a buff and have the other mob run at you and kill you. Attack and kill the mob that the guard is attacking, then move on to the next one.

On 10 man, the one guard can easily solo the two mobs without needing much help, but on 25 man, he will die and the adds will come after you if you don’t help him kill the adds.

Step 6: ????

Step 7: Profit

Gain reputation with Ashen Verdict, and collect your loot. On 10 man, you will get around 1 gold per pull, on 25 man, you get around 2.5 gold per pull.

Yes, the trash does drop greens and epics! I personally haven’t had any epics drop yet, but had a couple of greens drop for me. Plus the epics are Bind on Equipped!

Here is a list of epics the trash can drop:

[Rowan's Rifle of Silver Bullets]

[Belt of the Lonely Noble]

[Leggings of Dubious Charms]

[Stiffened Corpse Shoulderpads]

[Ring of Rotting Sinew]

[Harbinger's Bone Band]

[Wodin's Lucky Necklace]

Remember again, you can only pull the first two mobs, and will have to zone out and reset the instance before doing it again. You can only reset the instance five times an hour, before you are locked out of instances.

Not a fast way to farm rep, but if you are lucky enough to have an epic drop, it will be way worth the troubles. Along with the rings you can get with rep, there is a vendor that sells trade recipes for various professions.

Happy farming! Good luck on epic drops!Related Posts:

“The lich Lady Deathwhisper is the Supreme Overseer of the Cult of the Damned and the second boss of the Icecrown Citadel raid.” – WoWWiki.com

If you were a Sunwell Plateau raider back in the Burning Crusade, you will find this boss encounter very similar to the M’uru fight. Also much like the M’uru fight, this encounter will test your raid’s coordination and teamwork.

You will have to deal with waves and waves of adds while DPSing down Lady Deathwhisper’s Mana Shield. Not only that, you will have to deal with raid damage and crowd control. Sounds fun right?

Boss Stats:

Hit Points – 3,000,000 (10man), 13,400,000 (25man)

Mana – 3,300,000 (10man), 14,000,000 (25man)

10 Minute Enrage Timer

Phase One Abilities:

Mana Barrier: Absorbs all damage done to Lady Deathwhisper, draining her mana instead.

Shadow Bolt: Inflicts 7,438 to 9,562 (9k-11k on 25man) Shadow damage to the current target.

Death and Decay: Inflicts 4,500 (6k on 25man) Shadow damage every 1 second to enemies within the area of the spell. The entire spell lasts 10 seconds.

Dominate Mind: Mind Controls 1 player, increasing their damage by 200% and healing by 500%. Lasts 12 seconds. (25man only)

Dark Empowerment: Empowers a random Adherent or Fanatic, causing them to deal area damage with spells. Also makes the target immune to interrupts.

Phase Two Abilities:

Frostbolt: Inflicts 40,950 to 43,050 Frost damage to the current target. Can be interrupted.

Touch of Insignificance: Reduces the target’s threat generation by 20% per application. Stacks up to 5 times.

Death and Decay: Inflicts 4,500 Shadow damage every 1 second to enemies within the area of the spell. The entire spell lasts 10 seconds.

Recommended Consumables:

[Flask of the Frost Wyrm]

Food of your choice or Fish Feast

This is a complex fight with a lot of target switching, interrupting, crowd controlling, and a lot of raid awareness. You would want any consumables which may help your DPS.

Frost Mage Overview:

Pet Friendly: Friendly

Cooldowns: You will not have to save your Ice Blocks or Cold Snap for anything, so use it for emergencies.

Your Water Elemental will have a 80% damage reduction to AoE damage so you don’t have to worry about moving him around to avoid Death and Decay. Just keep him on Lady Deathwhisper the entire time to take down the Mana Barrier faster.

Deep Freeze

With all the target switching the entire fight, it’ll be hard to save your Deep Freezes for the boss. It would be a waste to cast it on an add, and it would be a waste of time to switch back to the boss to cast Deep Freeze, then switch back. Unless you use this handy macro I made by modifying a Sheeping macro I’ve been using.

#showtooltip Deep Freeze
/stopcasting
/cast [target=focus,exists,harm] Deep Freeze

Now whenever Fingers of Frost procs, and Deep Freeze is off cooldown, you can throw a Deep Freeze on Lady Deathwhisper without having to switch your target. You don’t have to be facing her to cast it either, just stand within range of Deep Freeze’s 36yd range.

Just make sure you make Lady Deathwhisper your focus target before the fight.

Phase One

During Phase One, there will be waves of adds that will enter from the sides of the room. In 10man, they will spawn from only one side at a time, alternating. In 25man, they spawn from both sides at the same time. In both version, there is one additional add that spawns from the stairs where you enter the room. This makes 4 adds per wave for 10man, and 7 adds per wave for 25man.

The raid’s priority should be taking down all the adds as soon as possible before switching back onto Lady Deathwhisper. Sometimes a person or two will be dedicated to DPSing Lady Deathwhisper the entire time to bring her into Phase Two faster, but having the entire raid focusing on adds first, is much safer.

Cult Adherents

These adds you should NOT be DPSing. They will be handled by the Physical DPS in your raid for these reasons:

Shroud of the Occult: Deflects all harmful spells back to their caster. Also prevents cast interrupting. Absorbs 50,000 damage before breaking.

Adherent’s Determination: Grants the Adherent 99% spell damage reduction. Used when Reanimated.

Cult Fanatics

These are the adds you will be focusing on. Fanatics will be you main priority, with Reanimated Fanatics being your top priority. They will also cast Vampiric Might on themselves- make sure you Spellsteal that buff!

Killing Fanatics take priority over DPSing the boss. The faster they are killed, the more time you can switch back onto the boss and keep DPSing. Have a macro set up for quick switching:

/target Cult Fanatic

Just make sure to give your tank a few seconds to pick up the add before you blow him up. They hit pretty hard, and can kill you in a few hits.

Decursing / Sheeping

During Phase One, the Adherent adds will also cast Curse of Turpor on random raid members. Make sure you decurse them as soon as you can. If it is on you AND another person, make sure you decurse yourself first. If not, that curse will put a 15 second cooldown on your Remove Curse ability.

During 25man, Lady Deathwhisper will randomly mind control a raid member. It will be your job to Polymorph that person as quickly as possible too.

Highly Recommended: Decursive Mod

Phase Two

When her Mana Barrier is depleted, she will move from her spot, and no more adds will spawn. Spread out all around her and DPS. Make you throw out a Counterspell whenever you can while she is casting Frostbolt. They hit very hard.

There will be ghosts which spawn from the corpse of the Adherent and Fanatic adds. If you see a ghost following you, run away. When they explode, it hurts.

Strategy

Keep Ice Barrier up, and don’t stand in the Death and Decay. Make sure all the Cult Fanatics are dead before switching back to the boss.

This fight is all about execution. If the raid does everything correctly, this fight will be very easy. Pay attention to your surroundings, and listen to vent for when your tank calls out for DPS. They will usually call out when there is a Reanimated Adherent or Fanatic, so be sure to listen if caster DPS is called for.

Mage Loots:

[Ring of Maddening Whispers](H) (25H)

Lots of good loot from this boss. The shoulders I would pass because you would want the Tier 10 shoulders. The Bracers of Dark Blessings I would pass to healers if they wanted it. Everything else I would go for.

“Lord Marrogar is a unique creature created of skeletons. He is the first boss in the Icecrown Citadel.”

He has one of the coolest boss character models- he is a 4-headed winged skeleton torso, with a big ice ax! As the first boss of Icecrown Citadel, he’ll serve as a gear check for Guilds to see if they are “ready” to tackle this raid instance.

Boss Stats:

Hit Points – 5,200,000 (10man), 23,740,000 (25man)

No Enrage Timer

Abilities:

Saber Lash: Inflicts 200% weapon damage split evenly between the target and its 2 nearest allies.

Bone Spike Graveyard: Hurls a spike at a random player, impaling all players between the boss and the target on Bone Spikes, inflicting 9,000 direct Physical damage, and additional 10% health as damage every 1 second until the spike is destroyed.

Coldflame: Inflicts 6,000 (9k on 25man) Frost damage every 1 second for 3 seconds to anyone caught by the moving line of frost.

Bone Storm: Inflicts 6,000 (12k on 25man) Physical damage every 2 seconds to players caught in the storm.

Recommended Consumables:

[Flask of the Frost Wyrm]

Spell Damage food of your choice or Feast

This is a simple fight with a bit of target switching, and a lot of raid awareness. You would want any consumables which may help your DPS.

Frost Mage Overview:

Pet Friendly: Friendly

Cooldowns: You may want to save your Ice Blocks, and Cold Snap for when you get trapped in a Bone Storm.

Your Water Elemental won’t be targeted by Bone Spike and is immune to the Coldflame- but he can be damaged by the Bone Storm. You pet will have a 80% damage reduction to AoE damage so you don’t have to worry about moving him around. Just have him keep on attacking.

Coldflame

During the fight Lord Marrowgar will spawn blue flames on the ground that will move out towards the raid in a linear path. There will be 4 flames, and they shoot out in an “X” pattern. Pretty simple, don’t stand in the blue flames. They do Frost damage, so have Frost Ward up!

The flame doesn’t follow anyone, it shoots out in a straight line. If you see one going towards you, simply side-step and continue on DPSing. Easy enough, no reason why you should take damage from this.

Bone Spikes

Every so often, he will do the Bone Spike Graveyard, which will target a random person in the raid. That person AND every person between him and the boss will be impaled by a Bone Spike. This means: Spread out, and don’t have anyone standing in front of you, between you and the boss.

Bone Spikes take priority over DPSing the boss. If someone is impaled, free him/her as soon as possible. Faster they are freed, the less damage they take, and the faster that person can go back to DPS/healing. Have a macro set up for quick switching:

/target Bone Spike

If you get impaled, you CANNOT Ice Block out of it. Just hope your raid buddies will free you before you die.

Bone Storm

At some points during the fight, he will begin to spin his ax around in circles, and start whirlwinding randomly around the room. At this point, try to spread out, but stay close enough to one of your healers to stay alive. Run away from Lord Marrowgar if you see him headed your direction. You can DPS if you want, but staying alive is more important.

During the Bone Storm phase, he will also spawn the Coldflames too. So keep a look out for the flames spreading on the floor. If you happen to get trapped by a wall with Marrowgar going all Tasmanian Devil on you, feel free to Ice Block and keep yourself alive.

When he stops his Bone Storm, ALL AGGRO RESETS, so let the main tank pick him back up before you start DPSing again. So pay attention and stop DPS when you see that he is about to stop spinning.

Strategy

DPS boss, kill Bone Spikes as soon as they appear, then hop back onto the boss. This isn’t a DPS race, it is a “pay attention and survive” fight. Dodge flames, run when he whirlwinds, and repeat. Keep Ice Barrier up!

Use Blink to get in range to help kill Bone Spikes, or use it to avoid flames, or to get away from the spinning Marrowgar himself. Keep Frost Ward up during the whirlwind phase just in case you have to run through some flames.

Mage Loots:

[Cord of the Patronizing Practitioner]

[Frost Needle]

[Bone Sentinel's Amulet] (25man)

[Crushing Coldwraith Belt] (25man)

[Frozen Bonespike] (25man)

[Loop of the Endless Labyrinth] (25man)

[Marrowgar's Frigid Eye] (25man)

A lot of good drop for Mages from the first boss of the instance. The only item that is iffy, is the Frigid Eye because of the mp5 on it. I personally think that ring is better than the Loop of the Endless Labyrinth if you are Hit Capped, but I don’t think I would roll against any healers that want it.

With the release of the latest Patch 3.3 – Fall of the Lich King, many Mages are going the trying out the new changes to Frost PvE. Permanent Water Elemental and using Deep Freeze on bosses were reason enough to give Frost a shot again in a raiding environment. Is it enough to hang with Fire and Arcane yet? We’ll see.

This guide will cover the essentials Glyphs of going the way of the Frost Mage. If you missed what the new changes are to the Frost glyphs, you can catch up on them here:

Patch 3.3 – Permanent Water Elemental

Patch 3.3 – Glyph of Eternal Water

Frost Glyphs

Minor Glyphs:

Glyph of Fire Ward

Glyph of Frost Ward

Glyph of Slow Fall

There is pretty much only three “useful” Minor Glyphs for a PvE Frost Mage. This would free up an inventory slot so you won’t have to hold any [Light Feather] for Slow Fall, and have a 5% chance to reflect any Frost or Fire damage with your Wards.

Yep… that is pretty much it for Minor Glyphs.

Major Glyphs:

Glyph of Eternal Water

Glyph of Frostbolt

Glyph of Molten Armor

Glyph of the Eternal Water is a new Glyph that was released with this patch, and the [Technique: Glyph of Eternal Water] can be bought at the Inscription Vendor in Dalaran. If you are an Inscriptionist, you will need to camp this NPC for a few times, because the Technique is sold in limited quantities.

This Glyph will make your Water Elemental a permanent pet. Just like before, your Water Elemental will be a good portion of your DPS, and having it out indefinitely will be a big boost in your DPS. Just make sure to keep your pet alive! The pet will lose the ability to cast Freeze, but you won’t need that for PvE.

Glyph of Frostbolt will lose the slow effect associated with the spell, but increase the damage it does by 5%. The slow effect won’t affect any of the bosses in dungeons and raids anyway, so it doesn’t matter. You can still proc Frostbite with this glyph on.

Glyph of Molten Armor will make your Molten Armor buff give you 55% of your Spirit as Critical Strike Rating. In your Arcane talent tree, you will have Student of the Mind, which will make this glyph even better!

We’ll see.

This guide will cover the essential Talents of going the way of the Frost Mage. If you missed what the new changes are to the Frost Talents, you can catch up on them here:

Patch 3.3 – Fingers of Frost

Patch 3.3 – Deep Freeze – Part 1 | Part 2

Frost Talents

The “Cookie Cutter” Frost PvE Spec is: 17(+1)/0/51(+2) with variations depending on how the Mage likes to play. There are essential talents, and there are option talents- depending on your flavor.

Essential Arcane:

2/2 Arcane Subtlety

3/3 Arcane Focus

5/5 Arcane Concentration

3/3 Student of the Mind

1/1 Focus Magic

3/3 Torment the Weak

Arcane Subtlety and Arcane Focus are pretty useless for a Frost Mage, but is a tad bit more useful than Arcane Stability. You have to spend the points somewhere, might as well make your Polymorph a bit better.

Who knows, you might have to do some up-close and personal AoEing with Arcane Explosions in the new dungeons and raids.

1/3 Spell Impact

You will need to invest one talent point into one of these three talents in order to gain access to the Tier 4 Talents to pick up Torment the Weak- the most important talent in the Arcane Tree. That will differ depending on the person and situation.

Fighting a lot off bosses which requires some resistance? Get Magic Absorption. Do you need the extra range for Sheeping? Get Magic Attunement. Do you like to throw in the occasional Cone of Cold or Ice Lance when you PvE? Get Spell Impact.

I personally got Spell Impact because I use Ice Lances and Cone of Cold a lot.

1/1 Deep Freeze

Why no Brain Freeze? Casting an Instant Fireball is a waste of a GCD, and would be a DPS loss compared to just casting another Frostbolt. Not worth it. Yet. We’ll have to wait until our Tier 10 Mage Set come into play. Until then, we’re leaving it off our Talent Tree.

Optional Frost:

Frostbite

Frost Warding

Improved Blizzard

You will need to spend at least three points into these talents in order to access the Tier 10 Talent for Chilled to the Bone, and Tier 11 Talent Deep Freeze. I would suggest putting at least 2 points into Frostbite, and 1 point into Improved Blizzard. This will make AoEing with Frost exponentially better. See Here for why.

You will have 2 remaining points to do whatever you want. Some players finish up Frostbite, and put the remaining point into Imp Blizz to make it 2/3. Some players put the two points into Frost Warding to have a chance to return Mana whenever absorb damage with Frost and Fire Ward.

Some players do a mixture of both. Again, it will depend on the player and the situations.

Kologarn is considered sixth boss encounter in Ulduar, after you have defeated XT-002 Deconstructor, and gain access to the Antichamber. He is the only non-optional boss in the Antichamber because he guards the Shattered Walkway into central Ulduar where not only is he protecting the bridge, he is the bridge.

He is a huge Titan boss, but you only fight his body from the torso, and up. Each of his arms are separate targets, and have their own health. Kologarn is often misquoted to be Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. His quotes are actually from the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Boss Stats:

Hit Points – 3,600,000 (normal), 15,340,000 (heroic)

No Enrage Timer

Abilities:

Shockwave: Inflicts 8,788 to 10,212 Nature damage to the whole raid. Used only by his Left Arm.

Recommended Consumables:

[Flask of the Frost Wyrm]

Spell Damage food of your choice or Feast

This is a simple fight with a bit of target switching, and a bit of AoEing. You would want any consumables which may help your DPS.

Frost Mage Overview:

Pet Friendly: Friendly

Cooldowns: You may want to save your Ice Blocks, and Cold Snap for when you get targeted by the Eye Beams.

Your Water Elemental won’t be targeted by any of Kologarn’s attacks but can be attacked by the spawns. They will be picked up by a tank so you shouldn’t have to worry about that. Your pet’s Freeze ability will come in handy to freeze all the adds together once the tank grabs aggro on them.

Kologarn’s Eye Beam

During the fight Kologarn will target a random raid member and shoot two Eye Beams at you. You can tell who the target is by seeing where the two beams first land. If there is a beam to the left and one to the right of you, then start running, the target is you! It’s like Felmyst all over again.

As a Mage, you can simply Blink away, and have a head start at kiting the beams. The beams moves a little bit slower than running speed, so kiting them shouldn’t be hard. As a Frost Mage, you can position yourself anywhere in the room (like in a corner), and if you get targeted, instead of causing panic and kiting through other players, you can simply Ice Block the beam, and the beam will stay on you without doing any damage.

Kologarn’s Arms

Occasionally Kologarn’s Right Arm will grab a random raid member (3 on Heroic Mode), and in order to free that person, the raid will need to inflict a certain amount of damage to the arm. 100,000 damage on Normal Mode and 480,000 damage on Heroic Mode. You CANNOT Ice Block if you get grabbed.

The raid will be attacking the Right Arm everytime it is up anyways, so it won’t be a problem to free anyone who gets grabbed. Everytime the arm is killed, Kolgarn main body loses health equal to the arm’s health (550,000 health on Normal Mode and 2,300,000 health on Heroic Mode).

Kologarn’s Left Arm is usually ignored, and the damage it does can be healed through. The Raid Leader may at some point call DPS on the Left Arm if he sees that the health is low from incidental AoEing.

Elemental Adds

Whenever an arm is destroyed, Kologarn will spawn a set of around 5 adds. The adds have around 52,000 health on Normal Mode and 130,000 health on Heroic Mode each. After the tank grabs the adds, you can start AoEing the adds down.

As a Frost Mage with Improved Blizzard and Frostbite, you can easily AoE the adds early and safely. It should only take one Blizzard with the help of the rest of the raid members to kill all the adds.

Again, you can use your Water Elemental’s Freeze to freeze the adds down, or even run up and Frost Nova them yourself to help keep them together.

Strategy

Kill the Right Arm, kill the adds, attack his main body, then back onto his Right Arm when it respawns. Rinse and Repeat. Collect loot. Heroic Mode is pretty much the same as Normal Mode, except his attacks do more damage, and Kologarn has more health.

Mage Loots:

[Pendant of Piercing Glare]

[Emerald Signet Ring]

[Spark of Hope]

[Bracer of Unleashed Magic] (heroic)

[Robes of Umbral Brute] (heroic)

[Ironmender] (heroic)

[Handwraps of Plentiful Recovery] (heroic)

As always, anything with Crit/Hit and Spell Power is up for grabs. The Gloves, though has Haste and Spell Power, I would grab if no healers wanted it. It has a… realy “Healy” name for the gloves, and it wouldn’t feel right if I took that over a Healer.

The Spirit Trinket, is something not for us Mages, but I kind of want to get one to see how much crit rating I can get with Molten Armor. The reduced Mana cost is nice to have too.
