Hey Tuna,

long time no comment!

Quests like the one you describe can be a right PITA and my tendency has always been to just drop the quest and move on, unless it's part of some important chain that I want to complete. After all, you can always pick it up again if you feel like doing it later.

This post did get me thinking a bit about how other MMOs handle quests, for better or for worse.

hmmm...

I guess this means its time to reveal my dirty secret... I haven't logged into wow since late last year (sometime before the pre-wotlk instance nerfs) because I started playing warhammer online with some friends.

I know! how could I! and I played a tank as well!

(it's OK I've quit it now)

One of the thing that kept me playing that game for a while was the public quest mechanic. I would expect to see something along the same lines appear in WoW at some point if it has not already and I think it has great potential to be lots of fun.

What I liked about this type of thing is that it's pretty much the opposite of the type of quest you describe above. You just turn up to the location at any time, and start participating in the event with whoever else happens to be in the area. Generally you kill a big stack of little guys, then out come a medium sized bunch of medium guys, then a single boss type who drops loot for everyone, and of course each stage rewards participants with XP.

The system is far from perfect but was certainly refreshing for a while.

so. Do I level zupa from 70 up or roll a DK?

<abbr><em>zupas last blog post..<a href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Automagica/~3/_8uroxtHEl4/dont-panic.html" rel="nofollow">DON'T PANIC</a></em></abbr>

Sounds like you'd be happier playing a game like "Left 4 Dead" instead of an MMO.

Hey Tuna, I actually just finished up that cauldron quest in icecrown yesterday. A couple bits of information for you.

One, horde and alliance can help each other do the quest. Separate groups have to do it multiple times to get everyone complete, but you don't have to be in someone's group to add mixture to the cauldron that they started. Whoever added mixture to the cauldron first gets the credit. I actually managed to complete it with a horde group the other day (I'm a dwarf DK).

Two, completing that quest leads to a daily quest where you have to do the exact same thing. In other words, anyone who has completed the quest can grab the daily from Thassarian on the airship and they'll have the mixture they need to help you complete your quest.

Hope this helps. Happy hunting.

2 additions to your list.
Increased spawn rate on mobs in a zone with lots of pcs is great. Until you attempt to sit & drink, 5 seconds later a mob spawns on top of you. And while I am at it, what's the story with quest mini boss respawns? You solo the boss, come out with 100 health and mana and by the time you have looted and sat down to regen, it's respawned.

The other painful one is the chain quest with multiple quests of the same name. You think you are on the same quest as your group mates, until someone doesn't get credit. Then, if you are nice, you have to wait and repeat to help them out.
